Beyond the six-finger critique

There is an entire commentary economy built around spotting AI flaws.

The six fingers. The jittery frames. The impossible lighting.

The mixed assets. The copy that sounds like it passed through a committee made of autocomplete.

Creatives have turned into hall monitors. The comments section is their beat.

But the critique itself is valuable.

If you can name the flaw, you already know the standard.

That is the part people miss.

If you can see the bad hands, you know anatomy matters. If you can see the lighting mismatch, you understand scene coherence. If you can hear the generic cadence, you understand voice.

Most people stop at disgust. Professionals should keep going.


Taste is not the opposite of AI

Taste is the thing that makes AI useful.

The operator who can spot bad output can also push the model away from it. They know what to ask for, what to reject, what to rerun, and what to repair by hand.

That is the gap between slop and usable work.

The prompt is not the product. The first output is not the product. The product is what survives judgment.

AI made the blank page cheaper. It did not make taste cheaper.

A person with no standards gets endless variations of the same bad idea. A person with standards gets leverage. They move faster because they know what finished looks like.

The people dunking on AI errors are often closer to the opportunity than the people praising every output. They already have the eye. They just need to stop treating the eye as a complaint engine.


The work is in the correction

Most AI content fails for boring reasons.

No point of view. No constraint. No final pass. No one asking whether the thing should exist before generating fifty versions of it.

That is not a model problem. That is an operator problem.

The useful skill is not “using AI.” That phrase is too broad to mean anything.

The useful skill is directing a system toward a standard, then refusing to publish until the output meets it.

That takes taste. It takes patience. It takes the willingness to delete work that almost gets there.

People call that editing when it happens to prose. They call it art direction when it happens to visuals. They call it QA when it happens to software.
